Cabbage Mama traditional and caraway sauerkraut made with fresh cabbage and carrots in Sydney

What Does Caraway Sauerkraut Taste Like? Traditional vs Caraway

I make two kinds of sauerkraut: Traditional and Caraway.

The short answer is simple.

Traditional is clean, bright and familiar. Caraway has the same tang and crunch, with a warm, slightly earthy note.

Both are made in Sydney in small batches. Both begin with cabbage, carrots, salt and filtered water. Neither contains vinegar.

So which jar should you choose? That comes down to the flavour you enjoy.

What does traditional sauerkraut taste like?

My Traditional Sauerkraut is the family recipe at its simplest.

It is crisp and tangy without another flavour competing for attention. This is the jar I would point to if you have never tried Cabbage Mama before, or if you want something easy to put beside almost anything.

Try it with eggs, roast meat, sandwiches or salad. Or eat it straight from the jar. No ceremony needed.

Ingredients: cabbage, carrots, salt, filtered water.

What does caraway sauerkraut taste like?

My Sauerkraut with Caraway Seeds begins with that same base, then I add caraway seeds.

Caraway is not hot or spicy. It brings a warm, slightly earthy flavour that feels especially at home with sausages, roast meat and potatoes.

It is still recognisably sauerkraut. It just has one more note in the jar.

Ingredients: cabbage, carrots, salt, filtered water, caraway seeds.

Still cannot choose?

That is exactly why I made the First Taste Bundle.

Choose one Traditional and one Caraway jar, taste them side by side, and let your own table decide.

Some people stay loyal to the original. Some discover that the little caraway seed changes everything.

I am happy with either answer.
